A Message from Haiti

Haiti continues to face unprecedented challenges—displacement, violence, and instability that have touched even our own team members. Recently, we received this message from Eddy, one of our colleagues working with Consider Haiti:

"My father, who was already sick, passed away as a result of the forced displacement.

Every day, we ask ourselves: how would we have coped with all these difficulties if it weren't for this organization (Consider Haiti) with whom I collaborate? Although our house is empty in terms of belongings, my family and I are grateful to have a roof over our heads and to be able to come and go as we please.

The children have quickly adapted to this new home and are working hard at school to try to catch up on what they've missed.

Why give a goat? 

Consider Haiti breeds Haitian female does with a Nubian Boer buck to attain hearty offspring adapted to local conditions. They are delivered to families in Montrouis, Fond Baptist, and Ivoire. We work closely with the families in the Community Health Program to ensure that they receive the gift of the goat and are able to utilize future offspring for nutrition, milk income, and school tuition. So as you can see, goats really are the key to many Haitian families that would otherwise find it nearly impossible to provide ongoing financial and nutritional support to their families.

NUTRITION: Goat’s milk is a sustainable source of calcium, protein, and other essential nutrients.

ECONOMIC STABILITY: A single goat can provide ongoing resources for an entire family.
By selling any extra milk or baby goats, our families are able to earn money for medicines and other necessities.

EDUCATION: Many families have been able to sell their goats at the start of the school year to fund their children’s educations. We are happy to support these families and their local schools through our efforts.

The gift of a water filter can provide: 

As the poorest nation in the western hemisphere, Haiti has to deal with issues of poverty and water scarcity on a daily basis. According to a study conducted by The Center for Human Rights and Global Justice, "only 55.2 percent of the population has access to an improved water source, while close to 70 percent does not have direct access to potable water. These figures, however, almost definitely overstate Haitians' access to improved water sources, since public systems are rarely available year-round" (15, CHRGJ, et al).

Expenses also often create problems with water availability. The World Bank estimates that "around 54 percent of the population lives on less than US$1 a day and 78 percent on less than US$2 (2001 data)" (The World Bank). Therefore, many Haitians often resort to gathering water from 'garbage-filled' rivers to supply their households with water for their daily needs, including cooking and drinking when water becomes too expensive or there they do not have access to a clean water source (36, CHRGJ, et al).

Wondering WHY you should consider Haiti?

Haiti is the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere and is among the top five poorest countries in the world. It is crippled by political, economic, environmental and social instability. Of their estimated population of 9 million, masses of Haitian people fight to simply survive each and every day.

While in a continued state of political unrest, which intermittently (and currently) freezes life and business in the country’s port areas, over 80% of the Haitian people live in poverty. Many families are without access to clean water, health care, proper lodging, or an adequate food supply.

How does a country with such destitute conditions exist on the doorstep of the United States of America? It is nearer to the coast of Florida than the sunshine state is to the majority of its fellow states! It is this disturbing question that begs an answer from those of us living in the very hands of prosperity and justice, and which leads groups like Consider Haiti to invest in a better future for the Haitian people.
